(Ed.D.) ABD Completion Pathway

Carson-Newman University’s All But Dissertation (ABD) Completion Pathway is a specialized program designed to help doctoral candidates who have completed all coursework in an Ed.D. program but have not yet finished their dissertation, successfully earn their doctorate. This fully online, research-intensive pathway provides a structured and supportive environment for educators to re-engage with their dissertation work. With personalized faculty mentorship, a cohort-based model, and a streamlined curriculum focused on advanced research methods and critical analysis, the ABD Completion Pathway empowers students to complete their degree with confidence and clarity. Whether your focus is on Administrative Leadership or Curriculum & Instruction, Carson-Newman’s pathway offers a flexible and rigorous route to achieving your academic and professional goals.

Administrative Leadership

The ABD Completion Pathway in Administrative Leadership at Carson-Newman University is designed for doctoral candidates who have completed all coursework in an Ed.D. or Ph.D. program but have not yet finished their dissertation. This fully online, asynchronous program provides a supportive structure for students to re-engage with their research and complete their degree. Candidates will join a small cohort and be assigned a dedicated faculty mentor from day one. The curriculum emphasizes advanced leadership theory, critical analysis, and research design, culminating in a dissertation aligned with educational leadership practices. Admission requires proof of ABD status from a regionally accredited institution, a professional portfolio, evidence of at least three years of professional experience in education, and an interview with the doctoral faculty.

Curriculum & Instruction

The ABD Completion Pathway in Curriculum & Instruction offers a second route for doctoral candidates who are “All But Dissertation” and wish to complete their Ed.D. with a focus on instructional leadership. Like the Administrative Leadership track, this program is 100% online and structured to support working professionals. Students benefit from personalized mentorship, a cohort-based learning model, and a curriculum that includes qualitative and quantitative research, contemporary educational issues, and dissertation development. This pathway is ideal for educators aiming to lead curriculum innovation, instructional design, or professional development initiatives. Applicants must provide official transcripts, a link to their previous institution’s graduate catalog, portfolio showcasing professional achievements and experience, and complete an interview with the doctoral faculty.
